The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button

Hellboy II: The Golden Army

Ron Pearlman, Selma Blair and Doug Jones, re-interpret the characters of Hellboy, affectionately nicknamed as Red; Elizabeth Sherman, the fire starter, and the cute and extravagant Abe Sapiens. This time joins to the team a new member, who is an ectoplasm (aghost), in a kind of diving suit, named Johan Krauss (the actor James Dodd, with the voice of another actor, Seth McFarlane).

On this occasion, the magical kingdom of goblins, elves, gnomes and trolls, is forced under the command of Prince Nuada to break an old truce pact with humanity by taking control of a formidable army of indestructible automaton that long ago ravaged the land.

What is striking in this second part is that I noticed that there is a better development of the main characters, including Hellboy. Basically, Red, Liz and Abe are aware that they are not like the rest of humanity, yet tenaciously struggling to find their humanity inside them, not knowing that these same desires of to seek acceptance, appreciation, or someone you love is something that characterizes humanity.

Prince Nuada (Luke Goss), is a villain of those who believe that they are doing the right thing, but instead they corrupt and eventually kill precisely what their seek to preserve, rather ironic. But still he is scary. Her twin sister Nuala (Anna Walton), will be the key to the achievement of its purposes.

Another thing that called my attention is that in this case the hero in question has an image that contradicts it. When he makes its presence known to the world, as well as the rest of his companions, he awaits for the recognition and gratitude of the people, for the many times that he and his team risked their lives to save them, but what they get are just insults, spitting, disdain and fear. This confuses him.

Nuada, will seize this to make a temptation to our hero, urging him to take their side and be served and feared, rather than fight for people who despises. Of course Hellboy refuse the offer, but moments later the words of the prince are shown as valid. In turn Abe Sapiens, also comes to have feelings toward the Princess Nuala, with whom he begins to develop an emotional bond.

Another thing that called my attention, is the fact that twice in this movie, two of the characters have decided to save his loved ones, even against the welfare of the rest of the world. It remains to be seen another topic that has intrigued me and is whether in the end Hellboy will succumb to the fate that is prophesied to be the very instrument of the destruction of humanity, or if eventually he’ll choose as he has been doing, to be the Savior.

Certainly this is not a film that will enter into the annals of film history, however it is an excellent addition to a year that has seen good and master of superheros comic adaptations, to the big screen. Del Toro, has led with success this story, we have entered into a magical world, quite similar to its late production "Pan's Labyrinth."

I’ll be waiting with more anxieties to a new chapter in the saga of Hellboy, although it should have a good time, given that del Toro should roll before the two parts of "The Hobbit," which undoubtedly will also be excellent films.

Bobby

"Few will have the greatness to bend history; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events...Each time a man stands up for an ideal...he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance."

On June 6, 1968, will die the life of who was considered by many the last chance for the U.S. to find true greatness.

Bobby, a film directed by Emilio Estevez, tells the lives of more than 20 people, as guests or workers of the Ambassador Hotel, on the day in which the primary elections unfold in the state of California. A varied cast of listed A and B players (Emilio Estevez, Laurence Fishburne, Heather Graham., Anthony Hopkins, Helen Hunt, Joshua Jackson, Lindsay Lohan, William H Macy among others), make up a diverse mosaic, whose sole purpose is to give us a look to an era that promised us so many changes, and that was silenced with the shooting of Sirham Sirham.

We see in this film a cluster of stories one more developed than others about diverse spectrum of social, racial and economic context of the era. They are mindful of the concerns about the war in Vietnam, the death of Martin Luther King Jr. About civil rights, experimentation with drugs, changes that generate anxiety, and above all the fact remains that there is still hope ...

I liked this movie because it captures perfectly the era (except for one or two anachronism), it has a soundtrack that is also a reflection of the times, and we see several characters, some more pleasant than others, who will gradually forming a particular universe that will know closely about the tragedy of losing a great promise of politics.

Emilio Estevez has been able to handle a whole range of actors and actresses, I have shown once again that the North also makes quality films from time to time, apart from the proverbial cotton and sugar candies that Hollywood launches each summer. Finally a movie that made me think and reflect on the direction that things have taken, especially when the current candidates for the White House, do not possess even a minimum percentage of the charisma that Bobby awakened then, not only locally but also worldwide. I recall clearly my parents crying when they learned of his death.

Wisely, Estevez chose to show the film archive in which a Bobby of flesh and blood makes a presence in the film as well as real, a bit too ethereal. Above all used audio of his speeches, to dial tone through the film. Bobby's speech that is heard at the end, is one that seems to have been written and designed for today, and it is something that has surprised me, because it has the feeling that had been written only yesterday. In the end, a film that causes me, both nostalgia and pain, nostalgia for my thoughts back to an era now gone forever, and pain, of missed opportunities and tragedies that happened in the flagship year of 1968.

PD Te amo (PS I Love You)

The film begins with the protagonic couple arguing about having children or not, on the circumstances that acording Holly (Hillary Swank), are not the ideal, while her husband Gerry (Gerard Butler), tries to bear the marital storm as best as he can. Holly dislikes especially that her husband have discussed the matter in front of his mother, the same who according to her, disapprove of the way in which Holly is leading her life.

Gerry is trying to cope with a recent company of limousines, in partnership with his friend John (James Marsters), while Holly wanders from one job to another, feeling that she has not yet found the ideal one, and feeling at the time that is not the right moment to have children.

A cut of scene, and we met Holly, surrounded by friends and relatives at the funeral of Gerry, who has just died (of cancer as we learned later). As might be expected after the funeral Holly falls in a deep depression, yet when his friends and his mother come to his house to celebrate her birthday, they find an apartment in appalling conditions. But a surprise is in store for Holly and their acquaintances, Gerry has arranged everything so after his death, a series of messages will come, to help her to overcome depression.

Thus Holly will receive the messages that left her dead husband, the same that will come little by little, they will help to transform and overcome their pain, and they will make it easier her transition to life without her husband.

I must say that this is a film that's with lower expectations on my part, and I am encouraged to watch it just because of Gerard Butler (300), but after seeing it, I was pleasantly surprised, because I could see a film that aparts itself a little from the molds of the romantic comedy, in fact I think it is more a "dramedy" than otherwise. The acting chemistry of Gerard Butler and Hillary Swank, is something that transcends the screen, and one is swept by the drama of Holly and his way back to life.

Holly is supported on this trip by his two friends, Denise (Lisa Kudrow) and Sharon (Gina Gershon) who accompany her on a return trip to Ireland, home of Gerry, and where Holly eventually end up founding herself, before returning to home and to regain the control of her life.

Special mention deserves Daniel (Harry Connick) who claims to be the "successor" of Gerry and William (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), an Irishman to whom Holly will meet on his trip to Ireland, both took part, though differently, on the Holly’s road back to normal.

The theme of overcoming the loss of a loved one even universal, is very rarely treated on the films, and I am glad to have witnessed this timea film that only for that reason it's worth seeing. Ah, I forgot, Patricia (Kathy Bates), Holly's mother, also plays a very interesting part and the final scene she shares with her daughter near the end of the film, for me it was like the icing on the cake.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

If there’s anything that I'm looking forward, is the Watchmen movie, an film adaptation, directed by Zack Znyder based on the homonymous work of genius Alan Moore, with no less brilliant drawings by Dave Gibbons.

The play in question, is one of the best graphic novels, it has not only transcended the genre of superheroes, but also has managed to transcend the framework of comics (and of course their usual readers), to earn respect for people who are not normally immersed in the genre.

Do not mean something else, the fact that the work of Moore, won the prestigious Hugo award, and it was graded by Time magazine as one of the top 100 novels in English since 1923 until the present. All the anterior apart from the numerous industry awards that this graphic novel has won since its initial appearance.

The book starts with the death of a superhero and his subsequent investigation by some of his former colleagues in his desire to unveil what could be a conspiracy to stop the masked vigilantes, who by the way do not enjoy the popular approval nor governmental. Meanwhile the world seems closer to the end of the Cold War, but not the way it ended really, but the way all the people feared back there in the early 60's.

The graphic novel in 12 separate chapters, is a reading, which not only invites to reread it once more, but several more times, and in each rereading you will be able to find new things and new details and new relationships between characters (even the secondary and tertiary) that before you were not able to notice. Not only that, the comic has been provided with a rich visual detail, even those who seem corny and worthless because after several readings a note that absolutely everything, it makes sense.

One would say that having read many times, eventually you will be getting bored at some point, but in my personal case, it does not, and there are still minor details, that make me wonder theories until the moment that they’re finally confirmed, discarded, or changed for one much better.

But I implore those who read this and who have not read the graphic novel so far, MAKE YOURSELF A GREAT SERVICE, do not seek anything more on the Internet or elsewhere, more explanation about the work, since when you have read it once, just then you’ll be in a better position to seek and enjoy any additional information that you can about the work.

The next film by Zack Znyder, even has the approval of the same Moore, and according to the promotional posters and pictures I have seen so far, I am told that Znyder has succeeded in capturing the visual universe created by Dave Gibbons, which in itself is already a huge incentive for wanting to see the flick. It remains to be seen whether the screenplay (which house caveats because of the enormity and complexity of the original work), achieves at least in capturing the essence of the world of Watchmen.

Por mi parte yo solo me sentiré defraudado grandemente si la obra no incluye la pieza musical de Billie Holiday, You’re My Thrill…

For my part I feel myself greatly disappointed if the work does not include the song by Billie Holiday, You're My Thrill…

Final Note: My friend Cristian Delgadillo noted that I confused to the artist of "V For Vendetta", Dave Lloyd, with the real artist of "Watchmen", Dave Gibbons, that error is corrected now, and I'm sorry for the mistake.

[speaking to Two-Face] "Do I really look like a guy with a plan? You know what I am? I'm a dog chasing cars. I wouldn't know what to do with one if I caught it. You know, I just do things. The mob has plans, the cops have plans, Gordon's got plans. You know, they're schemers. Schemers trying to control their worlds. I'm not a schemer. I try to show the schemers how pathetic their attempts to control things really are. So, when I say that you and your girlfriend was nothing personal, you know that I'm telling the truth."
