I remember as a child I often hear the phrase "Revenge is chamuña", every time one of us was the victim of a betrayal, (such as when a friend or neighbor companion of games doen't invite a cookie of his package, or you were excluded from his team to play anything), eventually I started to hear grown up people using the same phrase and already I guessed then that the same phrase was spoken with darker tones and more menacing than mere revenge for some children.

It is that time after I found out that the Aymara word "chamuña" was the equivalent of the Spanish word "caramelo" (candy). Almost at the same time I learned that word in particular referred in particular to some handycraft candy that were sold in wooden boxes, which served as a mold to the sweet paste, which after a time solidifying, were cut in the form of cubes, or rectangle and were sold to schoolchildren of yesteryear.

For when I was a child, "chamuñeros" were already fairly low, and it turns out that recently when I came to think of the phrase, title of this post, I've got a craving to eat "chamuñas", but that is one of the things that have already succumbed to modernity, and I suppose the flood of domestic and imported candies made at the factory, with more flashy wrappings and also cheaper.

On the phrase, reportedly we changed "revenge is sweet," to the more indigenous "revenge is chamuña," although by the way the phrase is more heard in La Paz and Oruro, than in the rest of Bolivia. Sadly, there is even a picture of how looked the famous chamuñas. Which brings me to think about how many there are things today that seem so common and ordinary that we can't stop to think about them, much less to consider saving some record of how they were prepared or as in my case even having an image to share.

It was the month of March 2005, and since soon my identity card would expire, before that happens, I decided to appear in person at the identification offices of the Police in the city of La Paz. The day in question I decided to go, I did this at about 10 am, only to find a chaos of people and desks scattered by the three floors of the building. The first thing that U had to do was go to one booth, which included a very long line of people, just to pay the cost of the process and the card in question, so I was there for a long time, moving one or two steps, in which it seemed to be wasted 10 to 15 minutes.

But I could get to the end to the booth bank installed there where you can buy the card to process identification. But only then I realized that they were already past the two p.m. and that I was late to get to work. Before I leave someone suggested me, that I should reach the office at the time that it was opened at 8:00 in the morning. Horror of horrors! because I am accustomed to sleep until ten or eleven because of my work in the newspaper that leads me to stay until past midnight, and once arrived at my house, no matter how tired I am,the dream flees from my presence as a vampire in the presence of the cross.

However, these sacrifices must be made because there is no choice but to take care of them personally. Yes, I was also suggested by several people that if I "oiled" the matter, I could get the bloody document in less than what it takes to eat some salteñas with its soda. But despite that I am a kind of spender with my money, that is, I'm the kind of person who is not accustomed to arguing about prices, and that whenever someone mention a price in the first place where I'm looking for something, I just lend the money without further preamble. And although the first day some officials hinted that if I wanted the ID, I could have it for the next day at least, despite this, there is something in me that prevents me from doing such things, first I'm a suspicious man, but mostly because I do not want to be the cause to get someone involved -and next to me-, in something that is clearly illegal and unethical.

So the next day, I go and find that even getting there at the 7 am, to be in time at about eight, I already found some people that there were been queuing outside from 4 or 5 o'clock in the morning. So I had to start queuing at my designated desk, which corresponded to the letter "V" for Valenzuela. When my turn finally came, the corporal Q., proceeded to fill my data as I give them to him, while an assistant of his, would be in the search for my "file". The "file" consists of a package in which they have my affiliation data with the card that you did before, plus your birth certificate, along with the cards in which you printed your fingerprints, as well as other papers for internal use of them, all nicely tied by a rope, which gives to the matter the impression of being in presence of a rustic gift.

Once the package was revised by the corporal Q., to my regret, he discovered that the birth certificate that I had left earlier, some dude of the Civil Registry, changed my name GARY by GARI, so that neither short nor lazy the concerned corporal wanted to proceed to rename the new ID. And when he gets ready to enter my name with the letter changed into his old Remington -yes believe it or not, they are still using typewriters, or at least they did in 2005- I presented my claim and I told him not to proceed with the change, before this and as the first time that I took an identity card I had done the initial tramit in the city of Oruro, then the corporal suggested that I go to the second floor office from where, upon payment, I could ask for the data ofy affiliation of the Oruro city, only that the consultation was via radiograms -yes, believe it or not in full twenty-first century, with the internet fully established in the city, the police still used the radiograms who were not otherwise that ask via radio, about my data, looking for someone in the Oruro, that will search, find an dictate the data via radio, to any person who was hearing to transcribe it here via typewriter-.

Well, I returned the next day, and I will ask for the famous radiograms, and it turns out that this time not only remained the initial mistake -GARI- but they also changed my birth date of October 2 to October 20 --ironically, I remembered ever have a thought that would have been great to have been born this date in particular (founding anniversary of La Paz), again I remarked these two errors after all I was suggested to get stopped the tramit for two days, time in which I was suggested looking fot his supervisor Sergeant L., to ask him about the possibility, that they respect the data that I had, since I was carrying too my military book, that was filled with the correct data.

The queue to meet with the bloody sergeant was too long, and if there is anything that caused me more outrage that the suffering to which I was subjected, was the fact that I witnessed, how diverse was the attention of police officers, from the lowest range to the highest levels, with people present there according to their social and economic status. Thus I noticed that for people they believed in good presence, they treated them in a more condescending way than the humble people, who was treated with rudeness, and worse if they were elderly, and much worse if they were from the countryside. Finally I came to the presence of Sergeant L., who despite my arguments -to submit additional documents which carried my correct name, he did not want to yield, but he hinted that something could be done if the matter were "oiled". I played a total dork to avoid have to say yes or not to his proposition, and finally he throwed me from his presence.

When I returned to corporal Q. two days after, I explained him how went the case, and he also seemed to realize that or I was a dork, or that I refused to "oil" the matter. Then he raised to my attention which might be the only solution to the freaking crossroad. That I should make a new petition to the Civil Registry, and through an attorney at law, ask for the correction un the mispelled letter of my name, just they can retore the original Y to my name.

Another tramit, another queue, which I had not suffer because my aunt had the courtesy of doing it for me, only that the matter lasted three days or so. After that I went once more to corporal Q. office, who sighing finally proceeded to deliver the data in the new card. Just then I could continue with the ordeal of having to go to make the queue so they can took my picture, and at least this was relatively fast, although they removed my glasses, the same that were almost embedded on my face for several years, and they put the number of my card in my chest, and just at the time I rehearsed a face of pain because I had stuck the pin of it in my chest, click!, and the photo was already in the Polaroid.

With that I finished the procedure and the next day finally FIIIINAAAAAALLYYYY! I could gather my new document just in time to get the money from my salary which had already been deposited in my account several days ago. I fell throughout this day into an ecstasy because the odyssey that had consumed nearly two weeks of my life had finally ended. But now it's aproaching more and more to my life the fateful day of March, 2011, when again I must attend to these offices and see what new surprises are ready to spoil my life…

If anyone wondered about the bloody name, unusual for my city, it turns out that my father who was a total movie fan, happened to name me with iit because he liked very much the actor Gary Cooper, albeit long after I learned that this was not his original name, but finally, that's another story.

El tragafuegos (The Fire Eater)

This story happened some time ago, when my sister, my brother and I were still impressionable children. As much of children often do, we used to play imitating things that we saw the adults were doing, what we saw at the movies, or as in the case in question, acrobatics and wonders that we saw in the circus.

At that time, visits from circuses to the city of Oruro was fairly regularly, and please note that I talk about circuses throughout the rule, those involving exotic animals of all kinds, including trained beasts, well-trained horses, graceful dogs and monkeys, tighrope walkers, jugglers, magicians, contortionists, trapeze artists (yes, I remember seeing the triple somersault) and finishing countless funny clowns.

Returning to the subject, one day, obviously after visiting a circus, it happened that my brothers and me, get to play imitating everything we had seen done in the circus. But for some reason my parents were not at home, I suppose my father was to deliver a working goldsmith, (he had a small workshop at home), and my mother went to the market or something like that.

This is how I was the tamer and my brothers were playing the role of tigers and lions, sometimes pretending to rebel, we played the clowns, we climb the fence of the house, which at the top was about 20 to 30 centimeters wide, and we walked over it holding a stick pretending that we were the daring tightrope walker, which made his act, several meters above the runway circus.

Thus inevitably we were running out of options to imitate-play, then, I don’t know how, to my mind come the idea of imitating the fireeater. When I proposed the idea, nor my sister, let alone my little brother were excited about the idea. I persisted in my stubbornness and I set out the action.

However, as my father had his workshop at home there, almost always, and I remark, almost always, he had gasoline available at home because he needed for his manual torch, as for one special largest torch, which twas used to melt gold and in order to work with it. Then began the search for gasoline, and I swear that we registered the entire house and just that day there was no fuel in any place. So as the saying goes, in the absence of bread, cakes are good, in this case kerosene, that if there were, because despite having a gas cooking, my mother still trusted the cooking certain foods to the same and returned to his beloved burner.

My brothers helped me to prepare a stick, which we wrapped with some old rags, soaked with a bit of kerosene and set on fire. While that was happening I emptied in a bit of pottery the kerosene I would take in my mouth, and then spitting it out in front of the lighted stick, thereby to form the fireball that many times we saw in the circus.

Having said and done, I took a sip of kerosene, held the home made torch and finally spitting out the kerosene and it formed a fireball, which to my brothers and me it seemed even more enormous than those we saw in the circus. They were frightened and escaped, and I do not like it at all the taste of kerosene in my mouth, shut down immediately with water the torch and that way the game ended as well my "career" as fire eater.

So far they have not dared to tell anyone ever about the incident-at least not to my knowledge, and it was not until much later when I was young that one day reading the story of a professional fire eater, in which he, -that did the trick with gasoline, had been neglected, leaving escape from their lips a small thread of gasoline, which was enough to turn on fire and causing serious burns to his inner mouth as well as on the face .

Then, for the first time a shiver went down through my whole body and I realized that if that day I found gasoline -I do not know why I thought it would taste better that the kerosene- perhaps you kind reader, would not be reading this blog. I just only think that the day in question, my guardian angel had to work hard to conceal the ubiquitous gasoline.

Recordando a Laika (Remembering Laika)

A stray dog was captured and thus overnight was removed from anonymity to world fame, but unfortunately at the expense of her life.

Laika, a name that stayed with her from several, was subjected to intensive tests, was immobilized with a special harness and they put her into the capsule of Sputnik 2. The russians launched her into space and they conveniently omitted to say a little important detail, that the trip was without safe return. They probably refrained from saying that because of the great voices of protest worldwide on the matter.

The dog was one of the martyrs in the space race in turn fuelled by the Cold War between the two powers of then. Only many time after we would know by the same Russians, that Laika despite having survived takeoff, and the intense gravitational forces, had died a few hours after being in orbit, most likely due to a failure in the capsule and the stress that the animal had to endure.

When I was a child in Oruro, always asked myself how it was possible that almost everyone happens to have a pet that is called so. Even I remember thinking, when I knew for the first time about the history of the cosmonaut dog, how the well known "Bolivian" name had come to them. Then I learned that it was the other way around, and almost can assure you that almost everyone who has lived in Bolivia in the 60's and 70's have ever known to some canine carrying that so well known name.

Today that marks 50 years since the re-entry into atmosphere of Sputnik, definitely turning into ashes the remains of Laika, I would like to invite you to hear the tribute of the Spanish group Mecano with a song simply called Laika

"Bella Notte"

I was around 11 or 12 years old, and I was desperate because the movie theater Palais Concert at Oruro was exhibiting the Walt Disney movie, "The Lady and the Tramp", apparently for the last time. It was a fact at the time that if a film was going out, it would be very difficult to see it again, unless it was one of those biblical epics that returned every Easter on the most of theaters then, almost as an obligation.

As much as I strive to remember, I do not kno
w how, but somehow I had enough money to pay the entrance to the function, which left only two small details in front of me, it was already 8 pm and the film in question went after another dealing with how the Brazilian team had won the World Cup in Mexico 1970.

Like any child who pushes the limits
, I already anticipated that if I entered to the theater, there would be consequences anything but nice for me, but between that and the fact of being closest to the door with the promise of enjoying a film, which for some strange reason had not been seen before, the last won. Ah! By then we -my brothers and I- had almost assured assistance to the movies of every Sunday morning, or if that's not happened, it was because the whole family went to see a premiere. So that is not entirely understood for me when other children, were not habituals as us, and sometimes they spoke of the matter in the same way that perhaps we should have described a trip to China or something so unusual as that.

The theater Palais Concert had –has?- a beautiful room, something similar to the Municipal Theater in La Paz, only in a slightly smaller size, and has some beautiful murals on the walls. One curious thing was that the lower part audience seats (platea), were more expensive, and that the top seats of Oruro theaters then called Gallery, these seats were cheaper, because there were only a few stands of timber, without backs. All this in contrast to the cinemas of La Paz where the lower audience seats (platea), were cheaper and that the top (upper) seats were called Mezzanine, were the most expensive.

Once inside the lights were turned off, and began with the first movie, and by that time I did not know what I lost, so I’ve lost any interest in the wonderful developments of Pelé, Tostão, Carlos Alberto, Jairzinho, Gerson and others. It seemed that each party outlined on the wanderings of that famous green-amarelha squad, even lasted longer than 45 minutes that lasted really each of those meetings. Finally Brazil won in the final match by 4-1 over Italy. And finally, after a short interval, the film that I wanted to see began, whose narrated version I’ve heard on the radio countless times.

Is it necessary to add that by that time I felt like going to another dimension? Well, if I always liked the movies, then the animated ones were for me the most. It is an acquired taste, and so far I haven’t left, although people who know me quite well, believed that I should have burned that stage.

The trouble came after the end of the function, the lights were lit and plus or minus 3 dozens of people who were in the movie, dispersed
everywhere as soon as they came to the 10 de Febrero square. Thus I stayed standing there for a few seconds and then I just realized what I had done, then in Oruro, close to midnight there was no public transport whatsoever, and even if they had been taxis, no longer have the money to pay, so the only thing I had to do was begin to walk the long way home. The distance covered from the 10 de Febrero square to the miner neighborhoods of the Northern Zone of Oruro, which is where I lived at that time (for those who know La Paz, the distance would be more or less like going from Isabel la Católica square until the Brewery (CBN) at Montes Av.

I don’t really know how much took me in making the trip, only thing I know is that I was scared to death, because with each step I realized that on the streets there was nobody, and the lights of the houses were all off, and the only noise I heard was the one I was making while walking. And now near at my neighborhood I began to recall another small detail that would arise between my home and myself. Many neighbors, let loose their dogs at night, so they were a deterrent to casual thieves who might stalk their homes.

Three blocks lasting to reach my house, I met a dog, that gave me no space, condemning me to the fate, he never tried to go after me while I was at far, he just made sure not to let me pass on the street every time I approached, and I was there for quite a while. Already after midnight. I was staying three blocks away from my house, and th
e dog refusing to yield pass. You can’t think about going by other side, since I could have met meanier dogs than this.

I imagine that in my house, knowing as I know to my mother, she surely was pushing to my father, and he had to leave. (I suppose that he was
to go to hospitals or the morgue, or ask if I have been seen by his known friends and relatives.) To my fortune he reached down the street and see me, he put the dog on the run, with which I was able to meet him, and so finally arrive at home. However, once there I received one of the spankings, those that you should remind all your life, but it is also a strange ting, that I can’t remember the details of it or how much it hurted, or if I were cut of some other privileges the following days. The big shock of walking alone through half of the Oruro city, and the fact of not being able to reach my house had passed, and I was also pleased to have done what I liked so much. Only now that I think about it and say that if I had known then that there was going to be a time when any film that I could have wished, would come in a small plastic disk, to be able to watch it countless times, well then I would have spared me the whole experience.

El viejo Merlan y mi casera (The old “Merlan” and my “casera”)

Turning after for a long time near the Perez Velasco sq., I found that the demolition of the old market Lanza, popularly known as the "Merlan" is almost over, so I decided to take some last pictures of the place where soon accordinng to the Mayor House of La Paz, there will be a modern building with many stories, where the “caseritas” may meet again with their customers.

Meanwhile, the “caseritas” have been temporarily located in the vicinity of the site and they are being distributed by the square Alonso de Mendoza, the Evaristo Valle street and the Plaza de los Heroes. Where obviously bear a discomfort that really hopefully not last longer than planned. And I say this, because the council has shown that it has a negligible delay record with the works under its charge.

I missed my own “casera” (1) at Merlan, which was located just at the entrance to the dining room on the left in the first place that offered sandwichs of “chorizo” (2). In La Paz I do not know of a best place to eat them, and in addition to being cost effective, compared to other places, they are a delight for me.

Fortunately walking by Montes Av., I’ve looked up in the Heriberto Gutierrez, the street that connects the Montes Av.. with Alonso de Mendoza Sq., and I saw the sign “Comedor Popular”, then I assumed that there I would find my old “casera”, and indeed, there we meet again and were delighted about the reunion. Immediately I began to enjoy a sandwich, and now I know I will come back regularly, as before, to that place, my “caserita” kindly agreed to pose for a photo, and it's shown in the last picture.

(1) Casera: In Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador y Perú, is the constant seller, respect of his/her client, and the seller refer with the same word to his/her constant client.

(2) Chorizo: A pork meat sausage, that is fried in boiling oil, or sometimes cooked in a grill.

El Soundtrack de tu vida - The Soundtrack Of Your Life

5. Cada pregunta, nueva canción

6. No mientas

My friend Lafa received a chain e-mail, but she doesn‘t forwarded it via e-mail, instead she played it in her blog, with results among weird and funny.
As the matter has not reached me via e-mail, well I have decided to follow via blog, too. We will see if more people are encouraged to continue it in this way.

Needless to say, as the rules demands I‘m gonna stick to the results. But I have to say that I‘ve made a clean-up and rebuild two library songs (in Spanish and English), One doesn‘t realize how many “trash” in mp3 has in his computer until such a thing happens, whatever, the only thing I did was to leave in place only the songs that I like, or as they say rock my world, so beauties as “Aserejé” or “La Macarena” are decidedly outside.

Instructions:
Let's pretend that our life is a movie.
So it works:
1. Open your library (iTunes, Winamp Media Player, iPod, etc.)
2. Put it at random or shuffle
3. Press play
4. For each question, writes down the song is playing
5. Each question, new song
6. Don‘t lie

Mi gato Tomás (Thomas, my cat)

He came to my life a February 1992 (perhaps it’s why I get to tell his story). My cousin and my aunt Paula Carmela, who had given the little cat offered to me, but I refused, not for lack of desire, but because I knew that if I took it home, my mother was going to be over me at all times (and sometimes it tends to be pretty obsessive when she gets a matter between eyebrow and eyebrow). To my surprise, it was she who decided that it would be a good idea to have a pet at home, and she initially was taking care of a small infection in his eyes.

When the time comes to think of a name for the cat, I began to think of several candidates. Silvestre seemed to fit because of his colours (white and black), but it seemed very long to say, and cats like short names, Garfield and Felix were also discarded and I decided that Thomas would be a double tribute to several other cats in the family called by this or similar names and the Tom Cat (the opposite of Jerry the mouse).

My feline companion since then, it has grown and has gone through several adventures too, and some almost tragedies. In the first house where I lived (the cat, not me), which was on the third story of a building, the poor trying to grab a dove was diving directly to the street before my eyes, I don’t remember how, but in a two by three came down to the street and the poor was pretty bruised, and without reaction, so my mother carried him to a veterinarian, who told us that nothing serious had happened.

Since then I got an obsession with not letting him go to the yard without supervision, and keeping windows closed at least while we were not in the house, or abandoned it for a while. In spite of all these precautions, and when he was a little older, the kitten again found a window open, and again threw a small direct flight to the street. All this happened as a result of my mother leaving opened the window, and I hadn’t noticed as I entered to the bathroom to take a shower, when I come out, my brother brought him back all bruised again, but this time he has an ugly open wound beneath the lower jaw.

As might be expected, further visit to the vet, and then the pet was prescribed antibiotics and was healed, this time our care become almost paranoid, to not let the cat would jump again, tempted by some pigeons, which came to our yard, windows and roof. Needless to say, I fall into the category of people who identify themselves with cats, and Thomas and I are so used to each other, he understands phrases (repeated hundreds of times), I say, and I interpret their meows and identified them according to their needs and what he tries to tell me.

With this February he reaches 16 years of company, and he’s turning old, but Thomas is still sound. It has its habits and peculiarities, if I ever get angry with him or he hadn’t see me for more than 24 hours, he often ignores me and escapes from me, until I talk to him with a lot of patience and persuade him to let me caress him again.

I always talk to him commissioning that he reserves a place for me in kittens’ heaven, because jokingly I tell him that in dogs’ heaven, I have no entrance.

Extrañaré a Bobby.
