Este blog hoy 22 de Julio cumple su primer aniversario. ¡Cómo pasa el tiempo!, aunque a veces tengo la percepción de que siempre lo he estado haciendo, otras me parece que es como si lo hubiera empezado hace solo un mes.

¿Hay algo más trillado que la historia de un don nadie, que sueña con ser alguien, y que a través de varios eventos, algunos de ellos completamente inesperados, logre finalmente realizar su ansiada meta? Kung Fu Panda de los estudios Dreamworks, toma una premisa de varias películas de artes marciales, en especial las que sirvieron de vitrina y salto a la fama de Jackie Chan, y nos narra la historia de un improbable panda quien se convertirá, a través de las enseñanzas contenidas en un rollo sagrado en el gran guerrero dragón, el único capaz de neutralizar la amenaza de Tai Lung, un malvado leopardo de las nieves, hijo adoptivo del maestro Shifu, y ex-pupilo quien renegara de su maestro y sus enseñanzas al serle negado el rollo que ahora se convertido en la razón y norte de su vida, aunque para ello tenga que acabar con todo el Valle de la paz, que es el lugar donde se desarrolla esta historia.

Is there anything more trite that the story of a nobody, who dreams of being someone, and that through several events, some of them completely unexpected, will finally realize their cherished goal? Kung Fu Panda of Dreamworks studios, takes a premise of several martial arts films, especially those who served as a showcase and leap to fame of Jackie Chan, and tells the story of an unlikely panda who will become, through the teachings contained in a holy roll in the great warrior dragon, the only one capable of neutralizing the threat of Tai Lung, a snow leopard, evil, adopted son of the master Shifu, and ex-pupil who reneged on his teacher and his teachings when he was denied the roll, that has become the reason and north of his life, no matter that in this path he swept away with the entire valley of peace, which is the place of our story.

Po, el panda en cuestión, sueña con ser alguien famoso en el Kung Fu, y sobre todo fantasea con la idea de ser él el famoso Guerrero Dragón. Sin embargo es mantenido en la realidad por su padre, un ganso, quien es el propietario de un restaurant donde ambos padre e hijo se dedican al negocio de vender sopa de fideos. Po sueña especialmente con conocer a sus ídolos los Cinco Furiosos, -la maestra Tigresa, Mono, Víbora, Grulla y Mantis- y este su afán el que fortuitamente lo introducirá en el camino de ser elegido por Oogway, la tortuga maestro de Shifu, como el elegido para ser el Guerrero Dragón.

Po, the panda in question, dreams of being someone famous in Kung Fu, and especially dreams with the idea of being him the famous Dragon Warrior. But the reality is brought back on him by his father, a goose, who owns a restaurant where both father and son engaged in the business of selling noodle soup. Po especially dreams with meeting their idols, the Five Furious, -the Tigress, Monkey, Viper, Crane and Mantis-, and this desire is what randomly will introduce him in the way of being elected by Oogway, Shifu’s turtle master, as the chosen one to be the Dragon Warrior.

Por supuesto esto desata la ira de Shifu, quien resiente el hecho de que su maestro, Oogway, haya elegido a quien le parece claramente no apto para la empresa de enfrentarse al temible Tai Lung, quien en una de las mejores secuencias de la película escapa del fondo de una cueva, lugar donde era custodiado por una legión de rinocerontes. Es así que Shifu empieza el entrenamiento de Po, pero en el fondo éste espera que el panda desista. No será hasta que entienda que realmente él es el elegido, que deba adaptar sus enseñanzas y se vea en la necesidad de variar sus métodos y encontrar una nueva formade enseñar a este atípico estudiante. Más adelante, sólo los ojos atentos al detalle, notarán el por qué de la elección de Oogway recayó en el panda.

Of course this unleashes the wrath of Shifu, who resent the fact that his teacher, Oogway, has chosen to whom seems clearly unfit for the job of facing the fearsome Tai Lung, who in one of the best sequences of the film escapes from the bottom of a cave, where he was guarded by a legion of rhinos. Thus begins the training of Po by Shifu, but deep down he hopes that the panda desist. It is not until he really understand that he is the chosen one, that he must adapt his teachings and see the need to change their methods and find a new way to teach this atypical student. Later, only the attentive eye to the detail, will notice the reason of the election of Oogway went to the panda.

Mientras tanto Tai Lung se aproxima al Valle de la paz, y es así que los Cinco Furiosos, van a su encuentro, y nos deleitan con otra asombrosa secuencia de batalla, en la que sin embargo, sólo acaban comprando un poco de tiempo antes de que Tai Lung trate de tomar por asalto aquello –el rollo sagrado- a lo que cree que tiene derecho. Inevitablemente se dará la confrontación final no sin que antes surjan una o más crisis de fe de parte de Shifu y de Po.

Meanwhile Tai Lung is approaching to the Valley of Peace, and so the Five Furious, will go to find him, and delight us with another amazing battle sequence, which however, only end up buying a little time before Tai Lung try to take for assault the holy roll, that he thinks it is entitled to him. Inevitably confrontation will not be meet without one or more crisis before emerging the faith on the part of Shifu and Po.

La película tiene una muy buena ambientación, tiene la música apropiada que la acompaña. En lo que respecta a las voces famosas del original en inglés, no las pude apreciar, ya que siendo esta una película orientada a los niños y jóvenes, como es casi la norma en Bolivia, ha sido doblada al español. Mi queja reside en que me hubiera gustado ver un poco más desarrollados a los Cinco Furiosos, quienes se ven reducidos a un papel demasiado secundario. La película cumple con la función de entretener, nos muestra dos lecciones, la primera acerca de no prejuzgar y la segunda acerca de que incluso cuando enseñamos, todavía tenemos que aprender.

The film has a very good atmosphere, it has the appropriate music that accompanies it. With regard to the famous voices of the original English, I could not hear them, because this being a film aimed at children and youth, as is almost the norm in Bolivia, has been dubbed into Spanish. My complaint is that I would have liked to see a little more development on the Five Furious, who are reduced to a secondary role too. The film fulfills the role of entertaining, shows us two lessons, the first about not prejudging and the second about that even when we teach, we still have to learn.

Aunque es casi indudable que tratarán de volver a esta película en una franquicia, sólo espero y confío en que las probables secuelas no empeoren, sino al contrario amplifiquen y mejoren los conceptos aquí presentados, y no hundan el bote como lo hicieron con la atroz tercera parte de Shrek. Sin duda el mejor esfuerzo de Dreamworks Studios hasta el momento, aunque todavía, a mi juicio, les falta para igualar o sobrepasar el nivel de Pixar/Disney.

Although it is almost certainly sure they try to return to this movie in a franchise, I only hope and trust that the probable sequels do not deteriorate, but rather enhance and amplify the concepts presented here, and that they don’t not sink the boat as they did with the atrocious third part of Shrek. Undoubtedly the best effort so far for Dreamworks Studios, but still, in my opinion, they lack to match or exceed the level of Pixar / Disney.

Manuel Monroy Chazarreta, más conocido por su nombre artístico de “El Papirri”, es uno de los autores y cantantes más característicos de La Paz, el mismo que con sus canciones nos habla de cosas cotidianas, pero vistas a través de su particular ingenio, y sin embargo en una de sus canciones más conocidas y celebradas, no ha hecho más que recopilar el mismo ingenio de la gente de Bolivia, y de La Paz en particular para compilar una serie de frases que conforman una peculiar forma de expresión a las que él ha bautizado con el nombre de Metafísica Popular.

Manuel Monroy Chazarreta, better known by his artistic name of “El Papirri”, is one of the authors and singers most characteristic of La Paz, who with his songs tell us about everyday things, but viewed through his particular wit, and however in one of its best known and celebrated songs, has done nothing but collect the same wit of the people of Bolivia, and of La Paz' people in particular to compile a series of phrases that make up a peculiar form of expression to which he has named as Popular Metaphysic.

Dichas frases que conforman en su mayoría contrasentidos, son una muestra del modo de hablar alrevesado que a veces tenemos, y que bien miradas y examinadas, son causa de risa, o por lo menos de desconcierto, en especial para la gente que se topa con ellas por primera vez. Así que con este post trataré de explicar hasta donde sea posible, las frases, ya que me temo, que algunas de ellas sólo las podrán entender, una vez que hayan vivido por un buen tiempo entre nosotros los boliviano, y los paceños en particular.

Such phrases contradictory in his majority, and are a mode of talk that shows that sometimes we have reversed meanings, and that well looked and examined, are a source of laughter, or at least confusion, especially for people who stumbles with them for the first time. So with this post I will try to explain to the extent possible, some of these phrases, because I fear that some of them may only be understand, once you have lived for quite a while between us, the Bolivian, and La Paz in particular.

Marjane Satrapi y Vincent Paronnaud dirigieron esta pequeña joyita animada titulada Persépolis, la misma que al igual que las dos novelas gráficas en las que se han basado cuentan la historia de Marjane Satrapi, desde su infancia en la Irán del Sha, hasta su entrada en la madurez, ya bajo el despiadado régimen del Irán de hoy.

Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud directed this little animated gem entitled Persepolis, the same as like the two graphic novels in which they have relied tell the story of Marjane Satrapi, from his childhood in the Iran of the Shah, pending its entry into the maturity, already under the ruthless regime of today Iran.

La película ha elegido el blanco y negro, con escasos cameos en color, para contarnos la historia de una angelical, pero ya bastante independiente niña, que crece junto a su familia de clase media, y que secretamente apoya los esfuerzos revolucionarios para derrocar al Sha. La niña pronto se verá influenciada por su familia, en especial por un tío, para que deje de apoyar al Sha y se comprometa con los ideales marxista-leninistas.

The film has chosen white and black, with little cameos in color, to tell us the story of an angelic, but already fairly independent girl who grows alongside his middle-class family, and that secretly supports revolutionary efforts to topple the Sha. The girl soon will be influenced by his family, especially by an uncle, to stop supporting the Shah and to be committed to the ideals of Marxism-Leninism.

Luego de que la revolución se instaura, viene un breve período de anarquía, el mismo que desembocará, como todos ya sabemos, en el actual régimen teocrático islámico que muy pronto se puso a retroceder los relojes en un país, que se había jactado de a pesar de seguir manteniendo el islamismo, era a su vez el más occidentalizado y moderno, a diferencia de sus más radicales vecinos.

After the revolution, comes a short period of anarchy, which culminate, as everyone already knows, in the current theocratic Islamic regime that was soon backing the clocks in a country that had boasted of despite continuing being islamic, was itself the most Westernized and modern, unlike its more radical neighbors.

Su actitud rebelde, llega a incluso a crearle problemas en la escuela, donde religiosas islámicas, cuentan las mentiras con las que quieren azucarar el actual régimen, es por ese motivo que sus padres deciden enviarla a Viena. Lugar en el que tratará de amoldarse primero, pero luego de varias dificultades, y algunas primeras decepciones amorosas, acabará deambulando por las calles de Viena, sola y enferma.

Her rebellious attitude, reaches even to create problems at school, where Islamic religious, are telling the lies with which they want to sugar coat the new regime, is for this reason that their parents decide to send her to Vienna. Place in which she seek to adjust first, but after several difficulties, and some initial love deceptions, eventually she will end wandering through the streets of Vienna, alone and sick.

Llega a un punto en su vida en que acaba añorando regresar a su país, lo cual hace sólo para darse cuenta que el estado de las cosas, no ha hecho más que empeorar desde que se fue. Es como yo digo, siempre que se vuelve a algún lugar, se lleva uno muchas decepciones, porque no todo sigue igual, y para bien o para mal las cosas siempre cambian. Es así que vemos a Marjane ahora viviendo una doble vida, al igual que muchos de sus pares, que en la vida pública se someten al omnipresente y opresivo régimen, pero que se las ingenian para tener sus fiestas, alcohol y música que están prohibidas.

She reachs a point in her life in which she is homesick, and after her return she realizes that the state of affairs has not only got worse since she left. It's like I say, always that one person returns to a place, he/she takes a lot of disappointment, because not everything stays the same, and for better or for worse things are forever changing. Persépolis perdió frente a Ratatouille, como la mejor película animada. Pero me atrevo a decir que de las producciones del año pasado, ésta debió figurar como contendiente a mejor película, en mi preferencia personal, lo es.
