¡Gracias Mamá! (Thank You Mom!)

Corría al año 1812, y un grupo de valerosas mujeres se alinearon y formaron un improvisado ejército para defender la ciudad de Cochabamba. El comandante español José Manuel Goyoneche, había derrotado a las tropas del patriota Esteban Arze, y se dirigía a la ciudad junto a su ejército, para someterla al saqueo, como escarmiento por haberse rebelado.

It was the year 1812, and a group of courageous women were lined up and formed a makeshift army to defend the city of Cochabamba. The Spanish commander Jose Manuel Goyoneche, had defeated the troops of the patriot Esteban Arze, and was headed along with his army to the city to submit it to looting, as a punishment for having rebelled.

Ante la inminente amenaza un grupo de mujeres lideradas por la ciega Manuela Gandarillas se organizan junto con niños, jovenzuelos y ancianos, que eran los que quedaban en la ciudad para hacerle frente a Goyoneche. La célebre frase de “Si no hay hombres para defender la Patria, aquí estamos las mujeres para hacerlo”, se puso en práctica en la colina de San Sebastián en el día 27 del mes de mayo. La desproporción en número y armamento era grande, pero eso no arredró a las bravas mujeres que ese día dieron su vida por defender la ciudad y el ideal naciente de la Patria.

Faced with the imminent threat a group of women led by the blind Manuela Gandarillas are organized together with children, elderly and young boys, which were those who remaining in the city to cope with Goyoneche. The famous phrase "If there are no men to defend the homeland, the women are ready to do it", was put in practice on the hill of San Sebastian on day 27 of May. The disparity in numbers and weaponry was great, but that does not inspired fear into the brave women who gave their lives that day to defend the city and the ideal source of the Nation.

Es por eso que Hernando Siles, presidente de Bolivia, en el año 1927, sacó una ley para que a partir de ese año, se reserve ese día en particular para agasajar a las madres bolivianas, en honor a las bravas mujeres cochabambinas que dieron su vida peleando por su patria y su hogar.

That's why Hernando Siles, president of Bolivia, in 1927, edicted a law that from that year, that day particularly is reserved to pay homage to Bolivian mothers, as a way to honor the brave women who gave their lives in Cochabamba fighting for their country and their homes.

Meteoro (Speed Racer)

Andy y Larry Wachowsky tomaron una serie de anime de los años 60 y la transformaron en una historia con actores de carne y hueso, en el proceso crearon lo que yo considero que es una obra que ha elevado el material original a nuevas alturas. En serio, yo no tenía grandes esperanzas con esta película, ya que muchas veces las adaptaciones de series de TV al cine, por lo general no han sido buenas. Esta es claramente una de las excepciones que confirman la regla.

Andy and Larry Wachowsky took an anime series of anime of the 60's and transformed it into a story with actors of flesh and blood, in the process they created what I think it is a work that has raised the original material to new heights. Seriously, I did not have high hopes with this movie, since that often adaptations of TV series to the movies, have generally not been good. This is clearly one of the exceptions that confirms the rule.

Meteoro Racer, desde muy pequeño soñó con alcanzar las marcas de su famoso hermano Rex Racer. Cuando crece se vuelve piloto de carreras y va tras su sueño de ser uno de los mejores, pero en su camino se interpone el señor Royalton, dueño de una corporación, el mismo que al ser rechazada como patrocinador por Meteoro y su familia, jura que acabará con la carrera y la familia del joven. En ese proceso conocerá del valor de su novia, de su familia, hará nuevos aliados, y finalmente llegará a correr y ser campeón como siempre lo soñó.

Speed Racer, since his childhood dreamed of achieving the marks of his famous brother Rex Racer. When he grows becomes a racing driver and goes after his dream of being one of the best, but in their way stands Mr Royalton, owner of a corporation, the same when is rejected as a sponsor by Meteor and his family, swears that will end the career and the family of the young boy. In this process he will know the courage of his girlfriend, his family, will make new allies, and finally come to run and be the champion as it always he dreamed.

Los que conocen la serie (como yo), saben de antemano de qué estoy hablando, los que no por favor que no se sorprendan si el argumento les parece muy simple, puesto que esta película es la adaptación de una serie destinada a los niños. Sin embargo, se las ha arreglado muy bien para no solo incluir visualmente todas las proezas y maravillas del famoso carro Mach 5 de Meteoro y sus Competidores, así como de los épicos e imposibles escenarios en donde una llanta pinchada es el menor de los problemas. Visualmente los Wachowsky han optado por usar una paleta de colores tan brillante, que al comienzo cuesta un poco acostumbrarse, pero que según avanza la historia, no hace más que darle el estilo único que esta adaptación requería.

Those who know the series (like me), know in advance what I am talking about, those who don’t, please do not be surprised if the argument seems very simple, since this movie is the adaptation of a series aimed at children. However, it has managed very well to include not only visually all feats and wonders of the famous car Mach 5 of Speed Racer and his competitors, as well as the epic and impossible scenarios where a flattire is the least of the problems. Visually the Wachowsky have opted to use a palette of colors so bright that at the beginning costs a little getting used to, but as the story progresses, this merely give it the unique style that this adaptation required.

La vertiginosa velocidad de unas carreras imposibles, unas pistas que desafían las leyes de la física y la gravedad, todo en esta cinta da la sensación de estar en una vertiginosa montaña rusa. El diálogo aunque simple, es efectivo y transmite justo las ideas que se necesitan saber para seguir sin demasiados problemas el ritmo de la historia.

The dizzying speed of impossible careers, some tracks that defy the laws of physics and gravity, all in this film gives the feeling of being at a dizzying roller coaster. The dialogue though simple, is effective and transmits the ideas that are needed to know to keep the story pace without too many problems.

El mensaje de unidad familiar, es uno que me llegado a impactar y mucho, puesto que ese detalle no lo recordaba tan bien. Susan Sarandon y John Goodman, desempeñan el papel de los padres de Meteoro, y debo decir que ambos me han sorprendido con sus actuaciones, pasando al frente en varias de las escenas en que tuvieron parte. Asimismo, quedé gratamente sorprendido al ver a Mathew Fox (Jack, de la serie Lost), en el papel del importante personaje de Corredor X.

The message of family unity is one that I come to admire and much, since that detail whas not remembered so well by me. Susan Sarandon and John Goodman, playing the role of the parents of Speed, and I must say that both have surprised me with his performances, passing in front in several of the scenes in which they took part. Also, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw Mathew Fox (Jack, from the TV series Lost), in the role of the important character Racer X.

Emile Hirsch como el joven Meteoro y Cristina Ricci como su novia Trixie, completan un reparto tan bien ajustado a sus papeles, que ahora siempre que oiga la palabra Meteoro asociaré a cada actor con su respectivo personaje en la película. Y ese por si solo es un gran logro.

Emile Hirsch as the young Speed Racer and Cristina Ricci as his girlfriend Trixie, complete a cast so well fitted to their parts, that now when I hear the words Speed Racer, I will associate each actor with their respective character in the film. And that in itself is a great achievement.

El estilo único del anime, también ha sido respetado, con la inclusión en rápida profusión de flashbacks, así como en las escenas de pelea, para finalizar con la inclusión de los divertidos e indicativos backgrounds realzando ciertos momentos especiales de la historia.

The unique style of anime, has also been respected, including a fast delivery of flashbacks, as well as the scenes of fighting, to finish with all the funny picturesque backgrounds that enhanced some special moments in the story.

En fin, en un post anterior dije que mi nivel de expectativa sobre esta película era de 6/10, pero debo decir que al final mi nivel de satisfacción fue de 8/10. Todavía sigo tarareando el tema musical “Go Speed Racer!, Go Speed Racer!, Go Speed Racer!, Go!”

Finally, in a previous post I said that my level of expectation on this movie was 6 / 10, but I must say that in the end my level of satisfaction was 8 / 10. I still keep humming the theme song “Go Speed Racer!, Go Speed Racer!, Go Speed Racer!, Go!”

Desde el viernes anterior, que algunos tristes personajes del exterior así como del interior de nuestro país se han esmerado de lo lindo para demostrarnos que los mismos merecen un calificativo: Cretinos

Since last Friday, some sad characters from abroad as well as inside our country have been working hard to demonstrate us that they deserve a qualifier: Cretins!

El tirano. Una vez más el “señor” Chávez se le ha ocurrido abrir el hocico ese que pasa por su boca para decir que intervendrá –militarmente- Bolivia. Y digo yo, quien le ha dado semejante autoridad de siquiera insinuar eso a este nefasto personaje, o acaso es que Evo y compañía no saben que eso es una intromisión abierta de una nación extranjera en asuntos que solamente nos deben competer a nosotros los bolivianos. Tal vez, y sólo tal vez es la consecuencia de recibirse dinero a montones, a cambio de dejar que este señor se refiera a Bolivia como si fuera su fundo. Sabe señor Chávez, ¡por mi usted se puede ir al cuerno!

The tyrant. Once again "mister" Chavez has opened the orifice that functions as his mouth to say that he would intervene -militarily- Bolivia. And I say, who has given such authority to even insinuate that, to this evil character, or perhaps is that Evo and company do not know that this is an open intrusion of a foreign nation on matters that only we Bolivians must cope with them. Maybe, just maybe that is the result of lots of money received in exchange for letting this gentleman referring to Bolivia as if it were his estate. You knows Mr Chavez, for me you can go to hell!

El terrorista. Hablando del otro Chávez, el peruano Walter Chávez ha sido protegido por la justicia boliviana (claramente influenciada por el gobierno) reconociéndole el status de refugiado político, a pesar de que en esa condición este señor jamás debería haber trabajado en el aparato estatal, y sin embargo no solo hizo eso, sino que además el Perú lo requiere por haber formado parte de la organización terrorista MRTA, y quien además resultó parte del secuestro del empresario Samuel Doria Medina. Eso sí, este gobierno masista no deberá hacer ningún lío el día de mañana cuando los EE.UU. nos nieguen la extradición de Sánchez de Lozada, basado en los mismos argumentos.

Speaking of another Chavez, the Peruvian Walter Chavez has been protected by Bolivian justice (clearly influenced by the government) recognizing him the status of political refugee, even though in that capacity this gentleman should never have worked in the state apparatus, however he not only did that but also is wanted by Peru as part of the MRTA terrorist organization, and he also was part of the abduction of businessman Samuel Doria Medina. But this MAS government should not make any mess tomorrow when the U.S. will refuse to extradite Sanchez de Lozada, based on the same arguments.

Claro tenía que aceptar el “reto” del referendo revocatorio, si fue su idea en primer lugar, lo que tal vez no sepa la gente de fuera es que en lugar de que la pregunta sea acerca de si estamos de acuerdo en ratificarlo (a él y a los prefectos), en lugar de decir si o no, y que el resultado se decida por simple mayoría (el 50% +1). No, ahora resulta que se sacan del sombrero unos cálculos mágicos, y resulta que hay que votar en contra por un porcentaje mayor al que obtuvieron en la votación en la que fueron electos. Aún así creo que a Evito y más de un prefecto les esperan unas sorpresas nada agradables.

Evo and his little advantages. Of course he had to accept the "challenge" of the veto referendum, if it was his idea in the first place, which might not know the people from outside is that instead of that question is about whether we agree to ratify them (the president and prefects), instead of saying yes or no, and that the outcome is decided by simple majority (50% +1). El “brujito”, Luis Alberto Aguilar, prefecto del departamento de Oruro, en una clara actitud servil al gobierno de turno, no ha cejado en su empeño hasta meter en la cárcel a un joven orureño por pintar “Autonomía ya!”. El cargo es sedición, hay muchas contradicciones, al joven le hallaron en su mochila un tarro de pintura negra, pero el graffiti en cuestión es con tinta azul. Ahora bien, pudieron pedir que lo enjuicien por otro delito, pero jamás por sedición, porque eso a nadie que ni siquiera sea abogado y tenga dos dedos de frente se le ocurriría la peregrina idea que se la ocurrido al patético prefecto antes músico reconocido y ahora un peón más de un presidente que también se ha vuelto peón de otro personaje, al que el denominativo de presidente le ha quedado holgado, y le ajusta mejor el de tirano.

El tragafuegos (The Fire Eater)

Esta historia sucedió hace tiempo atrás, cuando mi hermana, mi hermano y yo aún éramos niños impresionables. Como gran parte de los niños suelen hacer, nos poníamos a jugar imitando las cosas que veíamos hacer a los adultos, las que veíamos en el cine, o como en el caso en cuestión, las acrobacias y maravillas que veíamos en el circo.

This story happened some time ago, when my sister, my brother and I were still impressionable children. As much of children often do, we used to play imitating things that we saw the adults were doing, what we saw at the movies, or as in the case in question, acrobatics and wonders that we saw in the circus.

En ese entonces, la visita de los circos a la ciudad de Oruro era bastante regular, y téngase en cuenta que hablo de circos en toda la regla, de aquellos que incluían animales exóticos de todas clases, entre fieras amaestradas, caballos bien entrenados, perros y monos graciosos, equilibristas, malabaristas, magos, contorsionistas, trapecistas (si, me acuerdo haber visto el triple salto mortal) y de remate una infinidad de graciosos payasos.

At that time, visits from circuses to the city of Oruro was fairly regularly, and please note that I talk about circuses throughout the rule, those involving exotic animals of all kinds, including trained beasts, well-trained horses, graceful dogs and monkeys, tighrope walkers, jugglers, magicians, contortionists, trapeze artists (yes, I remember seeing the triple somersault) and finishing countless funny clowns.

Volviendo al asunto, un día, obviamente después de haber ido al circo, pues se nos ocurrió a mis hermanos y a mi, ponernos a jugar imitando todo lo que habíamos visto hacer en el circo. Ahora bien por alguna razón mis padres no estaban en casa, Supongo que mi padre fue a entregar algún trabajo de orfebrería, (él tenía un pequeño taller en casa), y que mi madre fue al mercado o algo así.

Returning to the subject, one day, obviously after visiting a circus, it happened that my brothers and me, get to play imitating everything we had seen done in the circus. This is how I was the tamer and my brothers were playing the role of tigers and lions, sometimes pretending to rebel, we played the clowns, we climb the fence of the house, which at the top was about 20 to 30 centimeters wide, and we walked over it holding a stick pretending that we were the daring tightrope walker, which made his act, several meters above the runway circus.

De ese modo inevitablemente se nos fueron acabando las opciones para imitar-jugar, cuando no se como se me vino a la mente la idea de imitar al tragafuegos. Cuando propuse la idea, ni mi hermana, ni mucho menos mi hermanito se entusiasmaron con la idea. Yo persistí en mi terquedad y me propuse realizar el acto.

Thus inevitably we were running out of options to imitate-play, then, I don’t know how, to my mind come the idea of imitating the fireeater. When I proposed the idea, nor my sister, let alone my little brother were excited about the idea. I persisted in my stubbornness and I set out the action.

Ahora bien, como mi padre tenía su taller ahí en casa, casi siempre, y enfatizo, casi siempre, había gasolina disponible en casa ya que la misma la necesitaba para su soplete de mano, como para uno especial más grande con el que solía fundir el oro para luego trabajarlo. Entonces comenzó la búsqueda por la gasolina, y juro que revisamos toda la casa y justo ese día no había el combustible por ningún lugar. Así que como dice el refrán, a falta de pan, buenas son las tortas, en este caso el kerosén, que si hubo, porque a pesar de tener cocina a gas, mi madre todavía no le confiaba la cocción de ciertas comidas a la misma y volvía a su adorado anafe.

However, as my father had his workshop at home there, almost always, and I remark, almost always, he had gasoline available at home because he needed for his manual torch, as for one special largest torch, which twas used to melt gold and in order to work with it. Mis hermanos me ayudaron a preparar un palo, al que envolvimos con unos trapos viejos, que empapamos con un poco del kerosén, y le prendimos fuego. Mientras eso pasaba yo vacíe en un jarro un poco del kerosén que iba a tomar, para luego escupirlo delante de la tea encendida, para de ese modo formar la bola de fuego que tantas veces viéramos en el circo.

My brothers helped me to prepare a stick, which we wrapped with some old rags, soaked with a bit of kerosene and set on fire. While that was happening I emptied in a bit of pottery the kerosene I would take in my mouth, and then spitting it out in front of the lighted stick, thereby to form the fireball that many times we saw in the circus.

Dicho y hecho, tomé un sorbo del kerosén, sostuve la improvisada tea y finalmente escupí el kerosén y se formó una bola de fuego, que a mis hermanos y a mi nos pareció incluso más enorme que las que vimos en el circo. Ellos se asustaron y escaparon, y como a mi no me hacía gracia en absoluto el sabor del kerosén en mi boca, apagué con agua inmediatamente la improvisada tea y así acabo el juego y mi “carrera” como tragafuegos.

Having said and done, I took a sip of kerosene, held the home made torch and finally spitting out the kerosene and it formed a fireball, which to my brothers and me it seemed even more enormous than those we saw in the circus. They were frightened and escaped, and I do not like it at all the taste of kerosene in my mouth, shut down immediately with water the torch and that way the game ended as well my "career" as fire eater.

Iron Man

La última adaptación de Marvel Comics al cine es Iron Man. La película cuenta la historia del origen de dicho superhéroe, que nace debido a la creación de Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), quien es la cabeza de Stark Industries, una corporación dedicada mayormente al diseño de tecnología aplicada al uso de armas, compañia que vale miles de millones de dólares y que la heredó de su padre.

The latest adaptation of Marvel Comics to the big screen is Iron Man. The film tells the story of the origin of that superhero, which rises due to the creation of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr..), who is the head of Stark Industries, a corporation devoted mostly to the design of technology oriented to the use of weapons, it's a company that worth billions of dóllars and that he inherited from his father.

Stark, es un mujeriego, un playboy quien vive según se viene el día, y a quien no le interesa otra cosa que lo que ha venido haciendo su corporación, vender armas al gobierno de los EE.UU., para dedicarse luego a sus más placenteras actividades. Luego, en una visita a Afganistán para efectuar una demostración de un nuevo misil al ejército americano, es herido y secuestrado por un grupo de insurgentes, los que aparentemente desean que Stark trabaje en la activación de las mismas armas que él iba a vender al ejército de su país.

Stark, is a ladies man, a playboy who lives as the day comes, and who is not interested in anything other than what he has been doing his corporation, selling weapons to the U.S. government, then to devote himself to his most enjoyable activities. Then, on a visit to Afghanistan to conduct a demonstration of a new missile to the U.S. army, he is wounded and abducted by a group of insurgents, who apparently want Stark works in the activation of the same weapons that he was going to sell to the army of his country.

En prisión se entera que otro prisionero, un doctor, le ha salvado la vida de la minúscula metralla que todavía tiene en el cuerpo y que podría matarlo, inplantándole un dispositivo en el pecho, el mismo que evita que ésta acabe matándolo. El y su eventual colega simulan estar trabajando en las activación de los misiles, cuando en realidad, Tony está construyendo el prototipo de lo que luego será su alter ego de Iron Man, el cual, efectivamente le sirve más tarde para escapar. Luego de que lo hace, volverá a su casa y trabajará en más prototipos hasta dar con el diseño final de lo que la prensa llegará a bautizar como Iron Man.

In prison he learns that another prisoner, a doctor, has saved his life from tiny shrapnel that still is in his body and could kill him, putting a device in his chest, which prevents that the shrapnel end killing him. He and his colleague simulate to be working in the activation of the missiles, when in fact, Tony is building the prototype of what later would be his alter ego of Iron Man, which effectively serves to escape later. After he does that, return to their home and work on more prototypes until the final design of what the press will baptize as Iron Man.

Esta adaptación realizada por Jon Favreau, nos muestra la génesis de Iron Man, desde una cueva en Afganistán hasta el corazón de los EE.UU., que es donde Tony Stark, rediseña y afina el traje que le servirá para llevar algo de justicia en el mundo. Sin embargo, él no puede darse cuenta que el enemigo lo tiene en casa, y que está justo al lado de él, en la persona de Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges), quien en su ausencia tomó el mando de Stark Industries, y de quien se nota a la legua que el regreso de Tony no le ha gustado nada.

This adaptation by Jon Favreau, shows the beginningof Iron Man, from a cave in Afghanistan to the heart of the U.S., where Tony Stark, redesigned and refined the suit that allowed him to bring some justice to the world. But he can not realize that he has the enemy at home, and which is right beside him, in the person of Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges), who in his absence took command of Stark Industries, and who is anything but happy with the return of Tony.

Virginia “Pepper” Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) es la fiel secretaria y asistente personal de Tony, y será esta quien desempeñe un papel importante para develar la traición de Obadiah y salvará a Tony. Y aquí no estoy diciendo nada que vaya a arruinar la sorpresa a nadie porque eso es lo que menos me gusta hacer.

Virginia "Pepper" Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) is the faithful secretary and Tony's personal assistant, and she is who will play an important role in revealing the betrayal of Obadiah and will save Tony's life. And here I am not saying anything that will ruin the surprise of anyone because that is what I dislike doing.

Robert Downey Jr, en un rol en que cabe tan perfectamente como Stark en su traje Iron Man. El ha sabido darle a Tony, justo el aire que se necesitaba. Un Jeff Bridges casi irreconocible por el cambio de apariencia y por el rol de villano. Paltrow encarna un papel que lo efectúa con solvencia, pero en el que la siento un poco subutilizada. En resumen una película que acaba gustando, aunque según mi opinión personal se han restringido un poco, en parte debido a las futuras secuelas que el filme ya tiene casi garantizadas.

Robert Downey Jr., in a role that it so perfectly fits as Stark in his Iron Man suit. He has managed to give Tony, just the air that was needed. A Jeff Bridges almost unrecognizable by the change in appearance and the role of villain. Paltrow embodies a role that is undertaken with solvency, but where I feel a bit underutilized. To sum up a movie that it is likeable, but according to my personal opinion has been restricted somewhat, partly due to future sequels that the film already has almost guaranteed.

Los efectos son muy buenos y no distraen de la historia, el vuelo de Iron Man entre dos jets es realmente uno de los puntos altos de la película. Alguno que otro momento mediocre, pero que en general, no alcanzan a arruinar la historia. Mi mayor objeción es que la pelea final, no es de lo mejor de la pelicula, considerando que el climax de este capítulo. Muchos no han dejado de notar -yo entre ellos- la similitud de esta cinta con Batman Begins de Nolan, en ambas tenemos playboys, afectados por una tragedia personal, cuasi víctimas de corporaciones cuyo único interés es ganar dinero a como de lugar; que cuentan con aliados fieles; ambos personajes se dedican a crear sus alter egos, los mismos que les ayudarán a traer un poco de justicia al mundo.

The effects are very good and they don't distract from the story, the Iron Man flight between two jets is actually one of the high points of the film. Some other mediocre moments, but generally they do not reach to ruin the story. My greatest objection is that the final fight, it is not the best thing about the film, considering that it's the climax of this chapter. Many have not left unoticed -I among them- the similarity between this movie and Nolan's Batman Begins, both have playboys, affected by a personal tragedy, quasi-victims of corporations whose only interest is to make money at any cost; they rely in faithful allies; both characters are dedicated to create their alter egos, the same ones that will help them to bring some justice to the world.

La segunda versión es en español, realizada por la artista chilena, radicada en México, Monna Bell, a quien acabo de redescubrirla, y quien tuviera una presencia fuerte en Latinoamérica allá en los años 60. Su versión titula "En el azul del cielo".

The second version is in Spanish, performed by the Chilean artist, that lived in Mexico, Monna Bell, whom I have rediscovered, and who used to have a strong presence in Latin America back in the 60's. His version entitled "En el azul del cielo" (In The Blue Of The Sky.)
