WALL·E

La nueva película de Disney/Pixar, bajo la dirección de Andrew Stanton, nos narra una historia de ciencia ficción en la que somos testigos de las andanzas de un solitario robot de nombre WALL-E, el mismo que al parecer es la última inteligencia dejada en la tierra, la misma que está llena de basura por donde se vea. Es en medio de este paisaje tan deprimente, que WALL-E acompañado de su pequeña mascota cucaracha, deambula compactando la basura y organizandolá para formar gigantescas torres que parecen edificios a la distancia.

The new film from Disney / Pixar, directed by Andrew Stanton, tells a story of science fiction in which we witness the wanderings of a lonely robot named WALL-E, which is apparently the latest intelligence left on the Earth, which is full of garbage where visible. It is in the midst of this landscape so depressing, that WALL-E accompanied by his small pet cockroach, moves compacting the garbage and arrange it to form giant towers that seem buildings in the distance.

Por supuesto siendo él la única inteligencia en el planeta tierra y estando completamente solo, vemos un comienzo bastante largo en la película antes de que podamos oír algún tipo de diálogo. Lo que vemos es a un robot –que bien podría pasar por hijo del famoso robot Johnny Five de la película Short Circuit-, quien empieza a desarrollar una curiosidad casi innata acerca de cosas inusuales que encuentra, mientras se dedica a su tarea, para luego retirarse a su refugio, lugar en el que se entretiene mirando una y otra vez la película Hello Dolly, y de ese modo empieza a añorar aquello que hasta ahora no ha podido sentir, amor.

Of course being he the only intelligence on the planet earth and being completely alone, we see a beginning rather long in the film before we can hear some kind of dialogue. What we see is a robot -that could be the son of the famous robot Johnny Five of the movie Short Circuit-, who begins to develop an almost innate curiosity about the unusual things that he finds, while dedicated to his task, and alter that he withdraw to its shelter, where he entertains himself watching again and again the film Hello Dolly, and thus begins to miss what so far has failed to feel, love.

Su monótona existencia se ve interrumpida con la aparición de una nave espacial, y de una robot de nombre Eva, con quien a pesar de los malentendidos iniciales, poco a poco empieza a iniciar una relación, pero la aparición de una planta, causa que Eva, regrese a su nave y emprenda el regreso al espacio, lugar al que WALL-E la seguirá, sólo para descubrir que la raza humana ahora vive en una gigantesca nave espacial, donde se la pasan reclinados en sillas flotantes y se desplazan con sus cuerpos amorfos, mientras que cada deseo suyo es asistido y controlado por la inteligencia artificial de la nave, que tiene como brazos operativos a una miríada de robots, algunos especializados y otros con múltiples capacidades.

His monotonous existence is interrupted by the appearance of a spaceship, and a robot named Eve, with whom despite initial misunderstandings, gradually begins to initiate a relationship, but the emergence of a plant, which cause that Eve returns to her ship and embark on the return to space, place to which the WALL-E will follow, only to discover that human race now lives in a gigantic spaceship, where they spend resting in floating chairs and moving their amorphous bodies, while their every wish is assisted and supervised by the artificial intelligence of the ship, whose operating arm is a myriad of robots, some specialized and others with multiple capabilities.

WALL-E es un personaje en la tradición de los grandes artista cómicos de la era silente, porque logra conectarnos con sus emociones a través del lenguaje facial y corporal solamente, y más tarde a través de su relación con Eva, será el agente catalizador para devolver la humanidad al género humano. Junto con Eva serán los héroes que logren junto con la ayuda de un adormecido capitán para retomar el control de la nave y el de sus destinos al retornar a la renacida Tierra que los espera. Me agradó mucho ver el obvio homenaje a “2001: A Space Odissey”, en los momentos en que el capitán retomó el control de nave, y el parecido de la computadora de la nave con el infame HAL 9000.

WALL-E is a character in the tradition of the great comic artist of the silent era, because it succeeds in connecting with their emotions through facial and body language alone, and later through its relationship with Eva, will be the catalyst for restore humanity to mankind. Together with Eva they will be the heroes who achieved together with the help of a dormant captain to regain control of the ship and its destinations to return to a reborn Earth as expected. I was pleased to see the much obvious homage to "2001: A Space Odissey" at the time when the captain returned to the control ship, and the similarity of the ship's computer with the infamous HAL 9000.

Por supuesto que una de los temas de la película es que somos tan desconsiderados con el planeta, que llegará el día en que tengamos que emigrar al espacio, en razón de escapar al desastre que estamos creando. Pero no se siente al menos que sea excesivamente sermoneadora al respecto. La animación como siempre, es un hito, y vemos a una tierra hermosamente estropeada, si se me permite la expresión, mostrando un gran contraste con el ambiente totalmente impecable de la nave espacial, pero que para mal de males sigue generando toneladas de basura.

Of course, one of the themes of the film is that we are so inconsiderate with the planet, that the day will come when we have to migrate into space, so we can to escape the disaster we are creating. But one doesn’t feel at least that is overly preachy about it. The animation as always, is a milestone, and we see a land beautifully ruined, if I may say so, showing a sharp contrast with the impeccable atmosphere of the spacecraft, but for worse still continues to generate tons of garbage.

En resumen puedo decirles que hay dos temas que no me gusta ver en las películas, el excesivo fetichismo por los autos y la velocidad (supongo que me quedé con los caballos del Far West) y las películas sobre robots adquiriendo características humanas, (A.I. y The Bicentennial Man), pero Pixar, primero con Cars y luego con esta última producción me han probado que si la historia tiene alma y corazón, sin mencionar que está muy bien ejecutada y presentada, que aún esos temas pueden llegar a gustarme. Sin duda un firme contendiente al Oscar de Animación del próximo año.

In summary I can tell you that there are two issues that I do not like to see in films, excessive fetishism by cars and speed (I suppose that I stayed with the horses of the Far West) and movies about robots taking on human characteristics, (AI and The Bicentennial Man), but Pixar, first with Cars and then with this latest production have proven me that if the story has heart and soul, not to mention that is very well executed and presented, that even those topics can come to like me. Certainly a strong contender for an Oscar animation next year.

Batman: The Dark Knight

La nueva película del genial Christopher Nolan, quien me ganó con su gran obra Memento, toma el universo que recreara para el vigilante de Ciudad Gótica, Batman, y lo eleva a un nuevo nivel de grandeza. La nueva película, Batman: El Caballero de la noche, nos cuenta la historia de la Trinidad Gótica: Harvey Dent, el nuevo fiscal de distrito, el teniente James Gordon y nuestro vigilante favorito Batman, en su lucha para dar un nuevo y casi fatal golpe a la mafia de Ciudad Gótica y así recuperar para las fuerzas del bien a la todavía corrupta ciudad.
The new film of brilliant Christopher Nolan, who won me with his great work Memento, takes to recreated universe for the vigilante of Gotham, Batman, and leads it to a new level of greatness. The new film, Batman: The Dark Knight, tells the story of the Gotham Trinity: Harvey Dent, the new district attorney, Lieutenant James Gordon and our favorite vigilante Batman in their fight to give a new and nearly fatal blow to the mafia of Gotham and recover for the forces of good to the still corrupt city.

Haré mi mejor esfuerzo esta vez para elogiar esta cinta sin estropearla demasiado para todo aquel que todavía gusta de ser sorprendido cuando va a ver algo por primera vez. Comenzaré diciendo que este es un film de las denominadas superproducciones veraniegas, las cuales casi siempre se han caracterizado por traer más ruido que nueces, y que después de consumidas aún te dejan con hambre. No es este el caso de esta película en particular. Yo considero que ésta es la mejor película de superhéroes que he visto hasta el momento (y debo admitir que soy un fanático de Superman), también la mejor película de Batman hecha hasta el momento, así como la mejor cinta que he visto en lo que va del 2008.
I will make my best effort this time to praise this film without spoiling too much for anyone who still likes to be surprised when go to watch something for the first time. Let me begin by saying that this is a film of the so-called summer blockbuster, which almost always been characterized by bringing more noise than nuts and after consumed still leaves you hungry. This is not the case for this movie in particular. I think that this is the best superhero movie I've seen so far (and I must admit that I’m a fan of Superman), also the best Batman movie made so far, as well as the best film I've seen in what runs from 2008.

Christian Bale, nos ofrece nuevamente una muy buena interpretación dual de las identidades del despreocupado playboy Bruce Wayne, máscara que usa muy bien para ocultar el hecho de que acostumbra a merodear de noche por los rascacielos de Ciudad Gótica, en busca de los malhechores. Esta vez es más físico que en Batman Begins, y le vemos mucho más preocupado acerca de los efectos de sus acciones. De lejos la mejor caracterización del encapuchado.
Christian Bale, again gives us a very good interpretation of the dual identities of carefree playboy Bruce Wayne, who uses well this mask to hide the fact that he usually prowls by night around Gotham skyscrapers, in search of wrongdoers. This time is more physical than in Batman Begins, and we see him a lot more concerned about the effects of their actions. By far this is the best characterization of the hooded guardian.

Heath Ledger, como el desquiciado Joker, es la interpretación más perfecta que he visto del personaje. En otras caracterizaciones por diferentes actores, la misma rayaba desde la simple comedia (César Romero) hasta una teatralidad exagerada (Jack Nicholson, ¡házte a un lado!) En cambio la nueva me ha provocado lo que siempre debió haber provocado el Joker, una sensación de angustia y miedo extremo, ya que nunca uno sabe qué es lo próximo que él va a hacer, aunque lo más seguro es que sea lo que haga no te va a gustar. Una de las mejores escenas es cuando Batman lo interroga y el le dice “Tú me completas”, y creo que esto es verdad, así como la luz completa a la oscuridad, o el bien al mal. Si Ledger por lo menos no es nominado a un Oscar, me sentiré completamente defraudado por la Academia de Hollywood.
Heath Ledger as the totally mad Joker, is the most perfect interpretation of the character I have ever seen. In other characterizations by different actors, the same ranged from simple comedy (Cesar Romero) to an exaggerated theatricality (Jack Nicholson, step aside!) Contrary to the previous versions, the new change has caused me what they always should have caused the Joker, a feeling of extreme fear and anguish, as one never knows what's he will do, but what is more certain is that you won’t like it. One of the best scenes is when the Batman interrogates him and he tells "You complete me" and I think this is true, as well as light completes to the darkness, good to evil. If Ledger is not at least nominated for an Oscar, I will feel completely disappointed by the Academy of Hollywood.

Maggie Gyllenhaal, como Rachel Dawes, se adecuó mejor a su papel, y mantuvo una mejor química con Bale. Sólo me quejo porque como siempre en las historias, las mujeres acaban como víctimas de primera línea. Gary Oldman, como el teniente Jim Gordon, nos vuelve a dar una sólida interpretación del aliado inmediato de Batman. Aaron Eckhart, me sorprendió porque también le supo dar desde un comienzo a su personaje Harvey Dent, las características malignas que luego se adueñarían de él después de su accidente, el mismo que provocara el nacimiento de “Dos Caras”.
Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel Dawes, is better adapted to her role, and had better chemistry with Bale. I’m just complaining because as always in the stories, women end up as front line victims. Gary Oldman as Lieutenant Jim Gordon, returns to give us a solid interpretation of the close ally of Batman. Aaron Eckhart, also surprised me because he gave from the beginning to his character Harvey Dent, the malignant characteristics which later takes over him after his accident, which caused the birth of "Two Faces.”

Una historia atrapante desde el mismo comienzo de la cinta, y que nos narra la lucha de la mafia de Ciudad Gótica por mantener el control, aunque deba apelar a una nueva clase de villano, que en realidad y como él mismo se llamara, es un agente del caos y la anarquía. El Joker esta ahí no porque le interese el dinero, el poder, o la fama, sino porque es un agente de corrupción y su meta final es probar que en el fondo todos somos como él, gente que mataría o cruzaría cualquier límite ético o moral con tal de sobrevivir. Por fin podemos ver adaptada en la gran pantalla esta clase de dilemas, que a los lectores de comics nos han cautivado desde hace tiempo y que allá por los mediados de los ochenta y gracias a las obras de Alan Moore (Watchmen, V for Vendetta) y Frank Miller (300, The Return Of The Dark Knight) entraron de lleno en la madurez. Ahora gracias a Nolan las películas de superhéroes han alcanzado también la mayoría de edad.
A catching story from the very beginning of the film, which tells us the struggle of the Gotham mobs to maintain control, no matter that they should appeal to a new kind of villain, who in reality and as he himself named, is a agent of chaos and anarchy. The Joker is there not because he is interested in money, power or fame, but because he is an agent of corruption and its ultimate goal is to prove that in essence we are all like him, people who kill or cross any limit ethical or moral as long as survival is on the stake. At last we can see adapted on the big screen this kind of dilemmas that have been captivated to the readers of comic books for some time and that back in the mid-eighties and through the works of Alan Moore (Watchmen, V for Vendetta) and Frank Miller (300, The Return Of The Dark Knight) came fully into maturity. Now thanks to Nolan superhero films have also reached the full adulthood.


En un post previo señalé que mi nivel de expectativa de esta cinta era de 10/10, pero bien puedo decir que aún este nivel se queda corto para medir mi nivel de satisfacción. Me olvidé mencionar que obviamente por el tono oscuro y cargado de violencia física y psicológica, este no es un film apto para niños.
In a previous post I signaled that my expectation level about this film would be 10/10, but I can assure you that even this falls short to measure my satisfaction level. I forgot to mention that obviously due to the dark tone and packed of physical and psychological violence, this is not a film for kids.

Este blog hoy 22 de Julio cumple su primer aniversario. ¡Cómo pasa el tiempo!, aunque a veces tengo la percepción de que siempre lo he estado haciendo, otras me parece que es como si lo hubiera empezado hace solo un mes.
This blog meets today, on July 22 its first anniversary. How time flies! Although I sometimes have the perception that I have always been doing it, at other times it seems as if I had started just a month ago.

Quiero aprovechar la oportunidad de agradecer a Matessa alias LaFa y a la Vania la Capsulita por ser las dos primeras que me apoyaron con un link en sus respectivos sitios, así como a todos los amig@s que lo hiceron después. Kung Fu Panda

¿Hay algo más trillado que la historia de un don nadie, que sueña con ser alguien, y que a través de varios eventos, algunos de ellos completamente inesperados, logre finalmente realizar su ansiada meta? Kung Fu Panda de los estudios Dreamworks, toma una premisa de varias películas de artes marciales, en especial las que sirvieron de vitrina y salto a la fama de Jackie Chan, y nos narra la historia de un improbable panda quien se convertirá, a través de las enseñanzas contenidas en un rollo sagrado en el gran guerrero dragón, el único capaz de neutralizar la amenaza de Tai Lung, un malvado leopardo de las nieves, hijo adoptivo del maestro Shifu, y ex-pupilo quien renegara de su maestro y sus enseñanzas al serle negado el rollo que ahora se convertido en la razón y norte de su vida, aunque para ello tenga que acabar con todo el Valle de la paz, que es el lugar donde se desarrolla esta historia.

Is there anything more trite that the story of a nobody, who dreams of being someone, and that through several events, some of them completely unexpected, will finally realize their cherished goal? Kung Fu Panda of Dreamworks studios, takes a premise of several martial arts films, especially those who served as a showcase and leap to fame of Jackie Chan, and tells the story of an unlikely panda who will become, through the teachings contained in a holy roll in the great warrior dragon, the only one capable of neutralizing the threat of Tai Lung, a snow leopard, evil, adopted son of the master Shifu, and ex-pupil who reneged on his teacher and his teachings when he was denied the roll, that has become the reason and north of his life, no matter that in this path he swept away with the entire valley of peace, which is the place of our story.

Po, el panda en cuestión, sueña con ser alguien famoso en el Kung Fu, y sobre todo fantasea con la idea de ser él el famoso Guerrero Dragón. Sin embargo es mantenido en la realidad por su padre, un ganso, quien es el propietario de un restaurant donde ambos padre e hijo se dedican al negocio de vender sopa de fideos. Po sueña especialmente con conocer a sus ídolos los Cinco Furiosos, -la maestra Tigresa, Mono, Víbora, Grulla y Mantis- y este su afán el que fortuitamente lo introducirá en el camino de ser elegido por Oogway, la tortuga maestro de Shifu, como el elegido para ser el Guerrero Dragón.

Po, the panda in question, dreams of being someone famous in Kung Fu, and especially dreams with the idea of being him the famous Dragon Warrior. But the reality is brought back on him by his father, a goose, who owns a restaurant where both father and son engaged in the business of selling noodle soup. Po especially dreams with meeting their idols, the Five Furious, -the Tigress, Monkey, Viper, Crane and Mantis-, and this desire is what randomly will introduce him in the way of being elected by Oogway, Shifu’s turtle master, as the chosen one to be the Dragon Warrior.

Por supuesto esto desata la ira de Shifu, quien resiente el hecho de que su maestro, Oogway, haya elegido a quien le parece claramente no apto para la empresa de enfrentarse al temible Tai Lung, quien en una de las mejores secuencias de la película escapa del fondo de una cueva, lugar donde era custodiado por una legión de rinocerontes. Es así que Shifu empieza el entrenamiento de Po, pero en el fondo éste espera que el panda desista. No será hasta que entienda que realmente él es el elegido, que deba adaptar sus enseñanzas y se vea en la necesidad de variar sus métodos y encontrar una nueva formade enseñar a este atípico estudiante. Más adelante, sólo los ojos atentos al detalle, notarán el por qué de la elección de Oogway recayó en el panda.

Of course this unleashes the wrath of Shifu, who resent the fact that his teacher, Oogway, has chosen to whom seems clearly unfit for the job of facing the fearsome Tai Lung, who in one of the best sequences of the film escapes from the bottom of a cave, where he was guarded by a legion of rhinos. Thus begins the training of Po by Shifu, but deep down he hopes that the panda desist. It is not until he really understand that he is the chosen one, that he must adapt his teachings and see the need to change their methods and find a new way to teach this atypical student. Later, only the attentive eye to the detail, will notice the reason of the election of Oogway went to the panda.

Mientras tanto Tai Lung se aproxima al Valle de la paz, y es así que los Cinco Furiosos, van a su encuentro, y nos deleitan con otra asombrosa secuencia de batalla, en la que sin embargo, sólo acaban comprando un poco de tiempo antes de que Tai Lung trate de tomar por asalto aquello –el rollo sagrado- a lo que cree que tiene derecho. Inevitablemente se dará la confrontación final no sin que antes surjan una o más crisis de fe de parte de Shifu y de Po.

Meanwhile Tai Lung is approaching to the Valley of Peace, and so the Five Furious, will go to find him, and delight us with another amazing battle sequence, which however, only end up buying a little time before Tai Lung try to take for assault the holy roll, that he thinks it is entitled to him. Inevitably confrontation will not be meet without one or more crisis before emerging the faith on the part of Shifu and Po.

La película tiene una muy buena ambientación, tiene la música apropiada que la acompaña. En lo que respecta a las voces famosas del original en inglés, no las pude apreciar, ya que siendo esta una película orientada a los niños y jóvenes, como es casi la norma en Bolivia, ha sido doblada al español. Mi queja reside en que me hubiera gustado ver un poco más desarrollados a los Cinco Furiosos, quienes se ven reducidos a un papel demasiado secundario. La película cumple con la función de entretener, nos muestra dos lecciones, la primera acerca de no prejuzgar y la segunda acerca de que incluso cuando enseñamos, todavía tenemos que aprender.

The film has a very good atmosphere, it has the appropriate music that accompanies it. With regard to the famous voices of the original English, I could not hear them, because this being a film aimed at children and youth, as is almost the norm in Bolivia, has been dubbed into Spanish. My complaint is that I would have liked to see a little more development on the Five Furious, who are reduced to a secondary role too. The film fulfills the role of entertaining, shows us two lessons, the first about not prejudging and the second about that even when we teach, we still have to learn.

Aunque es casi indudable que tratarán de volver a esta película en una franquicia, sólo espero y confío en que las probables secuelas no empeoren, sino al contrario amplifiquen y mejoren los conceptos aquí presentados, y no hundan el bote como lo hicieron con la atroz tercera parte de Shrek. Sin duda el mejor esfuerzo de Dreamworks Studios hasta el momento, aunque todavía, a mi juicio, les falta para igualar o sobrepasar el nivel de Pixar/Disney.

Although it is almost certainly sure they try to return to this movie in a franchise, I only hope and trust that the probable sequels do not deteriorate, but rather enhance and amplify the concepts presented here, and that they don’t not sink the boat as they did with the atrocious third part of Shrek. Undoubtedly the best effort so far for Dreamworks Studios, but still, in my opinion, they lack to match or exceed the level of Pixar / Disney.

Metafísica popular (Popular Methaphysic)

Manuel Monroy Chazarreta, más conocido por su nombre artístico de “El Papirri”, es uno de los autores y cantantes más característicos de La Paz, el mismo que con sus canciones nos habla de cosas cotidianas, pero vistas a través de su particular ingenio, y sin embargo en una de sus canciones más conocidas y celebradas, no ha hecho más que recopilar el mismo ingenio de la gente de Bolivia, y de La Paz en particular para compilar una serie de frases que conforman una peculiar forma de expresión a las que él ha bautizado con el nombre de Metafísica Popular.

Manuel Monroy Chazarreta, better known by his artistic name of “El Papirri”, is one of the authors and singers most characteristic of La Paz, who with his songs tell us about everyday things, but viewed through his particular wit, and however in one of its best known and celebrated songs, has done nothing but collect the same wit of the people of Bolivia, and of La Paz' people in particular to compile a series of phrases that make up a peculiar form of expression to which he has named as Popular Metaphysic.

Dichas frases que conforman en su mayoría contrasentidos, son una muestra del modo de hablar alrevesado que a veces tenemos, y que bien miradas y examinadas, son causa de risa, o por lo menos de desconcierto, en especial para la gente que se topa con ellas por primera vez. Así que con este post trataré de explicar hasta donde sea posible, las frases, ya que me temo, que algunas de ellas sólo las podrán entender, una vez que hayan vivido por un buen tiempo entre nosotros los boliviano, y los paceños en particular.

Such phrases contradictory in his majority, and are a mode of talk that shows that sometimes we have reversed meanings, and that well looked and examined, are a source of laughter, or at least confusion, especially for people who stumbles with them for the first time. So with this post I will try to explain to the extent possible, some of these phrases, because I fear that some of them may only be understand, once you have lived for quite a while between us, the Bolivian, and La Paz in particular.
