Hellboy II: The Golden Army

Ron Pearlman, Selma Blair y Doug Jones, vuelven a interpretar sus personajes de Hellboy, cariñosamente apodado como Rojo; Elizabeth Sherman, quien tiene el poder de generar flamas; y el simpático y extravagante Abe Sapiens. Esta vez se une al equipo un nuevo miembro, quien es un ectoplasma –un fantasma-, contenido en una especie de traje de buceo, de nombre Johan Krauss (el actor James Dodd, con la voz de otro actor Seth McFarlane).

Ron Pearlman, Selma Blair and Doug Jones, re-interpret the characters of Hellboy, affectionately nicknamed as Red; Elizabeth Sherman, the fire starter, and the cute and extravagant Abe Sapiens. This time joins to the team a new member, who is an ectoplasm (aghost), in a kind of diving suit, named Johan Krauss (the actor James Dodd, with the voice of another actor, Seth McFarlane).

En esta ocasión, el reino mágico de duendes, elfos, gnomos y trolls, es forzado bajo el mando del príncipe Nuada a romper un antiguo pacto de tregua con la humanidad, mediante la toma de control de un formidable ejército indestructible de autómatas que hace tiempo atrás asolaran la tierra,

On this occasion, the magical kingdom of goblins, elves, gnomes and trolls, is forced under the command of Prince Nuada to break an old truce pact with humanity by taking control of a formidable army of indestructible automaton that long ago ravaged the land.

Lo que es notorio de esta segunda parte, es que observo que hay un mejor desarrollo de los personajes principales, Hellboy incluido. En el fondo, tanto Rojo, como Liz y Abe, están conscientes de que no son como el resto de la humanidad, y sin embargo luchan tenazmente para encontrar en ellos su humanidad, sin saber que esos mismos anhelos de buscar aceptación, reconocimiento, o alguien a quien amar, son algo que caracterizan a la humanidad.

What is striking in this second part is that I noticed that there is a better development of the main characters, including Hellboy. Basically, Red, Liz and Abe are aware that they are not like the rest of humanity, yet tenaciously struggling to find their humanity inside them, not knowing that these same desires of to seek acceptance, appreciation, or someone you love is something that characterizes humanity.

El príncipe Nuada (Luke Goss), compone un villano de esos que aunque creen que están haciendo lo correcto, acaban por corromper y matar aquello que precisamente tratan de preservar, bastante irónico. Pero no por ello es menos atemorizante. Su hermana gemela Nuala (Anna Walton), será la clave para que el logre sus propósitos.

Prince Nuada (Luke Goss), is a villain of those who believe that they are doing the right thing, but instead they corrupt and eventually kill precisely what their seek to preserve, rather ironic. But still he is scary. Her twin sister Nuala (Anna Walton), will be the key to the achievement of its purposes.

Otra cosa que me ha llamado la atención es que en este caso en cuestión el héroe tiene una imagen que lo contradice. Cuando el hace pública su presencia en el mundo, así como la del resto de sus compañeros, espera por el reconocimiento y la gratitud de la gente, por las muchas veces que él y su equipo arriesgaron la vida para salvarlos, pero lo que obtiene a cambio son sólo insultos, escupitajos, desprecio y temor. Lo cual le confunde.

Another thing that called my attention is that in this case the hero in question has an image that contradicts it. When he makes its presence known to the world, as well as the rest of his companions, he awaits for the recognition and gratitude of the people, for the many times that he and his team risked their lives to save them, but what they get are just insults, spitting, disdain and fear. This confuses him.

Nuada, aprovechará esto último para tentar a nuestro héroe, instándole a tomar su bando y ser servido y temido, en lugar de pelear a favor de gente que lo desprecia. Por supuesto que Hellboy rehusará la oferta, aunque momentos después se hagan patentes las palabras del príncipe. A su turno Abe Sapiens, también llega a tener sentimientos hacia la princesa Nuala, con quien empieza a desarrollar un lazo emocional.

Nuada, will seize this to make a temptation to our hero, urging him to take their side and be served and feared, rather than fight for people who despises. Of course Hellboy refuse the offer, but moments later the words of the prince are shown as valid. In turn Abe Sapiens, also comes to have feelings toward the Princess Nuala, with whom he begins to develop an emotional bond.

Otra cosa que me llamó la atención, es el hecho de que en dos ocasiones en esta película, dos de los personajes hayan decidido salvar a sus seres amados, en contra incluso del bienestar del resto del mundo. Resta por ver otro tema que me tiene intrigado y es el de saber si al final Hellboy sucumbirá al destino que tiene profetizado de ser precisamente el instrumento de la destrucción de la Humanidad, o si llegado el momento, elegirá, como lo ha venido haciendo hasta ahora, ser el Salvador.

Another thing that called my attention, is the fact that twice in this movie, two of the characters have decided to save his loved ones, even against the welfare of the rest of the world. It remains to be seen another topic that has intrigued me and is whether in the end Hellboy will succumb to the fate that is prophesied to be the very instrument of the destruction of humanity, or if eventually he’ll choose as he has been doing, to be the Savior.

Ciertamente esta no es una película que entrará en los anales de la historia del cine, sin embargo es una excelente adición a un año que ha visto buenas y magistrales adaptaciones del comic de superhéroes, a la pantalla grande. Del Toro, ha conducido con acierto esta historia, que nos ha introducido en un mundo mágico, bastante parecido al de su producción “El Laberinto del Fauno”.

Certainly this is not a film that will enter into the annals of film history, however it is an excellent addition to a year that has seen good and master of superheros comic adaptations, to the big screen. Del Toro, has led with success this story, we have entered into a magical world, quite similar to its late production "Pan's Labyrinth."

Estaré esperando con más ansias un nuevo capítulo en la saga de Hellboy, aunque deba pasar un buen tiempo, dado que del Toro debe antes rodar las dos partes de “El Hobbit”, que sin duda alguna, también serán excelentes filmes.

I’ll be waiting with more anxieties to a new chapter in the saga of Hellboy, although it should have a good time, given that del Toro should roll before the two parts of "The Hobbit," which undoubtedly will also be excellent films.
